It’s probably fair to say that I watch a good amount of television and movies. I also read quite a bit of books and play a lot of video games. So with that under my belt I think it’s reasonable to say that I have to see characters developed and realized somewhat often. And yet it’s only now, after reading Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, can I really say I “get” characterization and the underlying paradox involving making a character really stand out. With that, come along on our adventure of “how to develop characters and how not to” that will take us from Jane Austen to the world of Heroes and with a little stop-off in the Warhammer 40000 universe.

I won’t spoil anything for you (of course), but the last two episodes of Stargate Atlantis are simply amazing. They question where the show has been, where it’s going, and it’s a fun ride. Be sure to check it out if you’re into Stargate. Hopefully the movie will keep the good streak going.

You know you watch too much Stargate when you get ads like this targeted at you:

The weird thing is, I clicked on the link and they don’t even mention a Stargate at all…

After watching all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1, I have seen the characters on that show exhibit an unusually high sense of morality, perhaps to an unrealistic extreme. They constantly put themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of those around them and attempt to negotiate at every chance they can. This is particularly true of Daniel Jackson, who has repeatedly tried to convince various hostile alien races (and numerous human factions) to take a peaceful approach.
Seeing this sets a high standard for the characters in the spin off series, Stargate Atlantis. However, there have been numerous occasions in Atlantis when the main characters take approaches that are difficult to justify in an ethical sense. Many are done with the standard aim of security and survival in mind, yet there are occasions when a perverted sense of ethics comes into play and has a surprisingly little impact on the other characters.
